I found this reading interesting because it's main point dealt with a tool that is an integral part of our society on a consistent basis. This essential tool is obviously the internet. The internet is a huge social tool that aims at connecting people from all over. This connection is key because it allows people to meet each other, when this option might not be available due to location. The social media sites like Facebook and Twitter give people the power to reach out to individuals whom they might not have the courage to reach out to in person. I find this as a potential problem because it allows people to voice their opinion in cyberspace, but that same person could restrain from voicing that same opinion when confronted in person.
This brings me to my next topic with regards to the way we communicate on the internet. This other option is what we are doing in this class currently ... the blog. To me, blogging is different from other ways of communication because all of the blogs that I have done have involved people whom I know. This makes it harder to hide when confronted because cyberspace can't protect you. I like this form of communication because it permits us to act the way we would if we weren't in cyberspace. The problems arise when we believe that our words can't hurt us because we'll never be confronted by people whom we don't know. For example, on other social media sites.
I agree with Curran's perspective of how the internet can cause problems with people because the role of bullying is still an issue in our society. This goes along with what I have previously touched on because people are ruthless. This bullying is a major problem because people feel empowered when they know that they are protected by their screen. There have been numerous instances made public about bullying on the internet and the results that have followed. Click here to view some instances where bullying has made people take their lives because of the ridicule they received from the hazing.
These examples show the negatives of the internet and the problems that can happen. Unfortunately, they overshadowed all the good that the internet offers. This problem will continue to be an issue in our society if we don't take action. We need to make sure that the internet continues to be a place that offers an educational experience, instead of a detriment to society. This makes me think of this question, what if the internet was altered and only used for necessities like school and work? How would our society react and how would that change how we communicate with others?
