Understanding The Internet- Group C

A lot of individuals choose to interpret the Internet as a comprehensive entity that was created by an individual and is one certain product. The internet, which is world encompassing and is still under 50 years of activity, is something that I feel is relatively untapped. That might be a little bit inaccurate to some, however this is a entire world that we have at our fingertips. I believe that we are just getting started as far as fully understanding just how powerful the net itself is and all of the ways that we can possibly use it.

A major part of the reason that its hard for us as people to have one understanding as far as the internet because, just as Curran states and alludes to in his various sections of text, everyone has a different understanding and interpretation. This translates over to the power that us as internet users has individually- because we all have different levels of understanding and interpretation, the access that we have been given by the internet to voice our opinions, create our own forums and network socially causes a dynamic that allows the common man to strip the elite of its power and create a new type of infrastructure that I feel will become more prevalent as time goes on. Just as stated in the text-

"'Power is moving away... from the old elite in our industry-  the editors, the chief executives and, let's face it, the proprietors and is being transferred to bloggers, social networks and consumers downloading from the web" - (Murdoch 2006)

That is a real fear for a lot of the people that are in authority or in control of social dynamics- or the people highlighted by Murdoch, as cited by Curran in his text. That's why these large corporations are making major moves and adjustments to stay in power (large news outlets such as CNN and New York Times create apps and attempt to keep a strong internet presence). However, the internet is giving the masses a voice- and that is why there is valid concern expressed by large companies who have established monopolies such as Viacom, etc. Thats why these large corporations buy out these strong forefronts such as Facebook and Twitter. They need to keep the influence and monetary benefits in their circle. The internet has changed the game drastically- and the interesting thing about it all is that we are just getting started. Once larger groups get on one accord, this will become the main form of company operation and group interaction. Life has changed because of the internet, and our understanding of it changes everyday, but gets better with time.
