Group C: McChesney's Digital Disconnect Chapters 6 & 7

McChesney's chapters 6 and 7 of Digital Disconnect was an informative piece because it made the reader aware of just how much our society is changing when it comes to journalism.  Meaning, the way we receive our information has changed throughout time with the new advancements that are being created.  While reading this, I couldn't help but think about what I was reading.  It is amazing how accurate this is because I too have witnessed how certain forms of journalism are deteriorating with time.
For a personal example, I can't even remember the last time I actually read a newspaper.  I just find it so cumbersome and annoying.  There are other ways for me to get my information and there are quicker ways too.  Yes I'll glance at the cover of a newspaper, but I'll do an internet search of what I saw for more information.  I like how I can have the entire world at my fingertips and I don't have to turn any big pages.  With that being said, I think our generation wouldn't miss a newspaper if it disappeared because we have others ways of receiving our information.
Even though I don't have social media, I still believe that it is where most of our generation receives information.  I still consider myself to be up-to-date with relevant news despite the fact that I don't have these sites.  I found this site that provided information on how our society receives information.  The results didn't surprise me because social media is taking our society over as the future.  Also, it allows our society to still be up-to-date with information without having to rely on older forms of journalism.  I don't mind that this is the future because it still allows us to be informed.
The only way I can see problems if newspaper disappeared is with the older generation.  For example, I know my grandparents still rely on newspapers to receive their information.  I believe when their generation is no longer present, that is when newspapers will truly disappear.  With that being said, the companies who run these different newspapers know that times are changing and they too are changing how they provide information to the public.  Newspapers are just another business of journalism, so they know how to make money.  They will eventually switch things up, so they can still generate revenue and provide to their clients.  I just don't know what other forms of communication could possibly follow in the footsteps of social media, do you?

  1. Yea, Tyler I completely agree with your point. My parents were pretty upset with the fact that newspapers really aren't printed anymore. But, they eventually just had to get over it and started using the internet to obtain their information. Of course, some think that its bad that newspapers are on the decline, but the spread information is increasing. If social media sites were the only way to obtain information, I would never trust anything that I hear or see. I would be even more skeptical of information than I am today. And, I'm not even sure what could possibly follow social other than maybe an enhance version of social media. Maybe something having to do with Google glass. Its kinda scary to think about, but if/ when Google glass gets big and everyone decides to wear it around, there;s gonna be some problems. With facial recognition combined with Google glass, for example, cities could become big social media platforms and although information on almost anything could be easily known with just a look, personal security would be jeopardized.

    1. I like your ideas Keon and I'm eager to see what happens. I completely agree with the Google Glass concept and it is scary. It's going to be interesting to see what transpires in the future with the different advancements.

  2. My grandparents also rely on newspaper for information. Both of my grandmas do not use the computer or the internet for a source of information. I feel that their generation relies heavily on newspapers in order to obtain information. This reminds me of how other generations relied on books to learn and get new information. Our generation revolves around the internet and what it can provide for us. Not only does it readily supply us with information, but gives us information so quickly. We expect information to be waiting for us whenever we want it. I feel as though we no longer have to work for knowledge, but it is waiting for us. Whenever I want to know something I just expect it to be waiting for me. I should be thankful that all of the information is waiting online for me. I wonder how hard my grandparents had to work to learn different information about subjects. I can search any topic on Wikipedia and know all about it. This makes me think about how generations are so different from one another and how technology has changed over the years.

    1. It really does make us appreciate what we have at the palm of our hands Eden. It's amazing how quickly we can figure out something that we didn't know a little before. Time will only tell when it comes to what our latest fad will be.
